Hanover

Hanover is the capital of the newly formed state of Lower Saxony (1946) and is part of Germany’s fourth largest metropolitan area, which consists of Hanover, Braunschweig, and Göttingen. With around 520,000 inhabitants, Hanover is the largest city in Niedersachsen and one of its main centers. Hanover is also the seat of the regional administrative body for Niedersachsen.

Furthermore, Hanover has several Universities and is an important industrial, commercial, and service center. Every year the Hanover Messe and CeBIT trade fairs draw worldwide attention. Through Agritechnica, the world’s leading exhibition for agricultural machinery takes place in Hanover every odd year in November. In 2000, Hannover hosted the World Exposition, Expo 2000. Hannover also annually hosts the largest shooting event in the world.

Local Agenda 21

On June 8th 1995, Hanover became officially affiliated with the objectives of Agenda 21. The council order requires the city to come into dialogue with the local people and community groups, i.e. clubs, associations, institutions, and private businesses. Everyone needs to work together to make the Local Agenda 21 successful in Hanover. Measures that improve our lives and are locally and globally compatible for us, our children and grandchildren, need to be developed and implemented for a better future. The Local Agenda 21 is a work in process that will grow year after year with new ideas.
