Habitat Tambacounda

The interdisciplinary project initiative "Habitat Tambacounda" formulates and implements long-term goals. The primary, overarching project objective is to introduce sustainable development to the poorest district of Dépôt, and to work out strategies for its implementation. In the future, these strategies could be exemplified for other areas and regions.

Migration in Context

Idea Development for Education on Migration in Germany and Senegal

Freundeskreis Tambacounda e.V., in collaboration with the Solar and Hygiene Center, participates in the North-South Exchange Program of the ASA. The ASA Program defines itself as a dynamic learning program aimed at open minded, critical thinkers who are interested in social and development politics.

Possibilities for Development in Peripheral Regions

Freundeskreis Tambacounda conducts all work in the field of education in Senegal from an academic background. Within the framework of a German Diploma (similar to a Master’s, but requiring more study) of the Geographic Institute at the Leibniz University of Hanover, the education system of Senegal was analyzed. “Possibilities for Development in Peripheral Regions through the Decentralizing of Higher Education, with the Region of Tambacounda, Senegal as Case Study” researched the following thesis:

Institutions of higher education are necessary for the development of peripheral regions; institutions located in distanced centers only have marginal effects upon the peripheral.

Renovation of the Sada Maka Sy Primary School

The primary school „Sada Maka Sy“ is located in Dépot, the poorest quarter of Tambacounda. Fourteen teachers are responsible for over one thousand students. There are up to 90 students in the beginning grades alone. The buildings were in a desolate condition, one classroom was entirely broken down, and cars sped over the unenclosed schoolyard. Neither toilets nor a water supply was provided.

In 1994 the school was renovated and remodeled with the help of the Freundeskreis Tambacounda. Blackboards and benches were renewed and a wall was built around the schoolyard.  Later on, solar panels were also placed upon the roof to further the pilot energy-production project.

More Light for Sada Maka Sy Primary School

Since December 1998, light for the primary school has been provided through several lamps powered by a solar battery, leaving students and teachers alike impressed. We would like to continue the good work by installing more solar modules on the roof to provide energy for more lamps in the classrooms.
