The Solar and Hygiene Center Tambacounda

The Solar and Hygiene Center was put forth as a model project to showcase ecological construction, a ground water protection system, as well as the use of solar energy. In the Center, training courses and seminars take place to demonstrate which possibilities for good hygiene practices (e.g. through dry toilets) and health care options (e.g. malaria prophylaxis and diabetes consultation) are available. The training course’s target group is concentrated upon those who can easily influence the community at large, which includes teachers, cooperatives, etc.

Through a chance encounter the idea for this project came up: two journeymen drove for 6 weeks to Tambacounda and with the help of local artisans, built a half-timbered rambler. The joint work, along with getting to know the differing construction methods, resulted in a practical cultural exchange of which all involved were enthused. The rambler was built on the premises of the Solar and Hygiene Center.
